Funding Opportunities

The following is a list of funding opportunities and resources we think are particularly well suited to WAC student members. We also strongly encourage you to check if you could seek funding from any of the following sources:

  • your current or intended academic department or university
  • your university's scholarship and undergraduate research support services
  • your national government's education programs (and international relations departments/ programs if you plan to conduct research outside your country)
  • local archaeology and history societies who may offer support
  • scholarships offered by the professional archaeology organization(s) for your region or topic of study

Funding for Current Students


Social Science Scholarships, Fellowships, and Postdoctoral Awards list and Native American Scholarships list by Francisco A. Tomei Torres

Smithsonian Institution Fellowships Listing - Fellowships organized by institution, including a variety of historical and material culture areas of interest to archaeologists, as well as technical museum training

National Geographic's Young Explorers Grant - For exploration-based research done by people aged 18-25

National Geographic's Waitt Grants - Funding for direct costs of research with exceptional scientific merit, no advanced degree required

Cultural Experiences Abroad scholarships - Programs for American and Canadian students for global learning experiences, six slightly different programs ranging $500-$3,000 US

UNESCO Fellowships Programmes - Fellowship programs for study in particular countries including China, Israel, Japan, and Saudi Arabia

Humanities, Arts, Science, Technology Alliance and Collaboratory (HASTAC) Scholars - For students at all levels pursuing projects in digital media and learning

American Center for Oriental Research (ACOR) Fellowships - Many fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students, many require research to be done in Jordan (Also summarized here by AIA)

Institute for Field Research (IFR) Scholarships - Nonprofit archaeologist-run organization, offers need- and merit-based scholarships, historically underrepresented group scholarships, and support for students to attend the Oman-Bat program to research Persian Gulf cultures

Society for American Archaeology (SAA) Native American Scholarships - Must be member of SAA. Scholarships for Native American students and employees of tribal cultural preservation programs (up to $10,000).

Fulbright US Study/Research Grants - Research grants for American students doing research abroad, requirements vary by country where research will take place

Explorer's Club Student Grants - $500-5,000 for exploration and field research by secondary school, undergraduate, and graduate students

Institute for Humane Studies Scholarships and Grants - Funding for graduate school application fees and graduate students pursuing liberty-advancing academic research (especially seem to favor programmes relating to policy and ethics, past and present).

The Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens Fellowship for Research in Greece - supports travel to Greece for Australian post-graduate students and academics from Australian Universities.

Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc. Student Support Fund - research grants open to honours and masters by coursework students at Australian universities

Society for Classical Studies Minority Scholarship in Classics and Classical Archaeology - scholarship to help minority American undergraduate students prepare for graduate research

Funding for Archaeological Field School

AIA Waldbaum Field School Scholarship - Must be member of AIA. $1000 scholarship for US and Canada undergraduates or first-year graduate students.

Cohen Family American Archaeology Abroad Fellowship - Fellowship up to $1500 for students enrolled in an American college or university

Sacramento Archeological Society, Inc. Student Scholarship - Student funding up to $1500 to participate in archaeological research, must be willing to present at a public forum in the Sacramento, California area in return

Funding for Graduate Research

Wenner Gren Foundation Dissertation Fieldwork Grant - Funding for PhD projects in anthropology (including anthropological archaeology)

Wenner Gren Foundation Wadsworth International Fellowship -  Funding for students pursuing a doctoral degree in anthropology (including archaeology)  who also come from economically disadvantaged countries

Wenner Gren Foundation Wadsworth African Fellowship - Funding for African students pursuing a doctoral degree in anthropology (including archaeology) at a South African University

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Grant  - Funding for United States PhD students to conduct research outside the country

Law and Social Science Dissertation Fellowship and Mentoring Program - In-residence fellowship for students writing doctoral dissertations on law and social science with $30,000 stipend (US)

National Science Foundation (NSF) Archaeology Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Awards - Up to $20,000 for students enrolled at US universities to conduct dissertation research, including field and non-field projects

Harry Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellowships - Funding ($20,000) for the dissertation-writing portion of the PhD where research concerns understanding human violence and aggression (have funded many anthropological studies internationally, potential for archaeology as well)

Open Society Foundation Civil Society Scholar Award - Funding for PhD students and faculty from specific African, Middle Eastern, and European countries studying social sciences who need funding to access research resources for their work, up to $15,000

Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research - American Philosophical Society's grant for field-dependent studies by doctoral students who are US citizens, US residents, based at a US institution, or plan to carry out their work in the US, up to $5,000

Leakey Foundation General Research Grant - For doctoral students, post-doctoral students, and senior scientists studying human origins and evolution, up to $25,000

Leakey Foundation Baldwin Memorial Fellowship - Fellowship for students and scholars who are citizens of developing countries and wish to pursue an advanced degree outside the country, up to $15,000 per year for up to two years

Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources - Doctoral fellowship through Council on Library and Information Sources for research in "original sources" including books, documents, audiovisual material, artwork, and born-digital sources (appropriate for historical and contemporary archaeology, at the least)

Dumbarton Oaks Fellowships and Grants - Grants, residential fellowships, and pre-doctoral residencies in pre-Columbian, Byzantine, and Garden and Landscape studies

AIA Olivia James Traveling Fellowship - Must be member of AIA. Up to $25,000 for US citizens engaged in classical archaeology research, for travel but not to support field excavation expenses. Must be a PhD student or immediately after.

JASON History and Archaeology Scholarships Listing -  scholarships in this database apply to Australian students wishing to study at home or abroad, and to international students wishing to study in Australia

Funding for Collections Research

The Field Museum (Chicago) Research Scholarships - Fellowships, internships, and scholarships for all undergraduates, graduate students, and short-term collection researchers at the Field Museum

Smithsonian Native American Community Scholars and Visiting Student Awards - For Native American students pursuing research related to Native American resources at the Smithsonian Institution, provides stipend, possible travel allowance, and mentorship

Lemelson Center Travel to Collections Awards - Short-term travel awards for researchers to use the archives at the National Museum of American History

American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) Collection Study Grants - Short-term support for travel and subsistence during collection research at the museum by researchers, including graduate students

Oriental Institute Collections Research Grant - Up to $10,000 for graduate students and scholars affiliated with a university to fund travel and research activities at the institute

Dumbarton Oaks One-Month Research Stipends - $3,000, one month stipend for scholars who hold a terminal degree in their field (e.g. PhD) to do advanced research using Byzantine, pre-Columbian, or Garden and Landscape Studies research materials at Dumbarton Oaks libraries, museum, and archives

National Library of Australia Fellowships and Scholarships - provides funding to allow established and emerging researchers, practising writers and artists, and younger scholars to work with the library's archive materials. Scholarship for postgraduate students open only to Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Australian Museum Research Institute Visiting Fellowships - funding open to postgraduate students to work with any of the Museum’s collections and research programs

Funding for Student Travel to Conferences

World Archaeological Congress Travel Support - For students and economically disadvantaged persons wanting to attend WAC Congresses

Archaeological Institute of America Graduate Student Travel Award - For graduate students attending the annual AIA meeting

Royal Archaeological Institute Cheney Bursaries - to enable students to attend RAI meetings and conferences

Similarly to the few opportunities listed above, many conferences around the world provide travel awards to assist students with the costs of attending their conference, please make sure you check the relevant conference website (or with the organizers) what opportunities may be available to you. Some conferences also waive or discount registration fees for students who volunteer during the conference, you will need to check whether volunteers are needed with the organizers of the conference you want to attend.

Institute for Southeast Asian Archaeology Early Career Award - $1000 award for early career academics in Southeast Asian archaeology awarded every two years

Cotsen Institute of Archaeology Postdoctoral Fellowship - Postdoctoral study and teaching program

School for Advanced Research Scholars - Resident and summer scholars fellowships for writing already-completed social sciences, humanities, and Native arts research

W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research Fellowships - Residential fellowships for students and scholars of Near Eastern studies, to be completed in Rhode Island (US)

Wenner Gren Foundation Grants for Post-PhD Scholars  -  Range of postdoctoral research grants and fellowships, available for scholars from any nationality or country.

Australian Academy of Humanities Travelling Fellowships - supports early-career researchers undertake research overseas; applications must be a permanent resident of Australia.

European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme - international mobility program for early-career (and established) researchers in the humanities and social sciences.

Fondation Fyssen Post-doctoral Study Grants - research grants to work at in France or for holders or a French PhD to work abroad.

Marie Curie Individual Fellowships - provides European and Global fellowships for postdoctoral researchers looking to enhance their career development and prospects by working abroad.

Heritage Portal funding - Listing of heritage funding resources

Fellowships, Grants, and Scholarships at AIA - Listing of advertised non-AIA-funded opportunities for students and non-students alike

Rotary Club Global Grants - Support for large international projects ($30,000+) with sustainable, measurable outcomes in the Rotary's areas of focus (such as promoting peace, supporting education, growing local economies)

US Department of State's Museum Connect Program - Provides resources for US and international museums to become partners, focus on local community engagement, and increase cross-cultural understanding

National Science Foundation Archaeology and Archaeometry Funding (US) - Archaeology grants from the US government, broadly funds scientific archaeological research projects including separate awards in archaeometry and high risk archaeology/biological anthropology

Wenner-Gren Anthropology Grants - Postdoctoral fellowships, funding for returning to research locale to share results, funding for international collaboration between researchers

Lithics Studies Society John Wymer Bursary - open to students, academics, others professionally engaged in lithic study, and those simply pursuing an interest in lithics as a hobby (must be a member of the society).
